An App to Help You Win at Poker?

An App to Help You Win at Poker?

Quick heads up — this one's not about magic, it's about Poker. Curious? Stick around. Not your thing? Normal service resumes next post. Okay... here we go.

I recently got into Poker.

Years ago I was sponsored by Pokerstars for their 'touch' program.

They got pros like Daniel Negreanu to teach normal beginners, like me, how to play texas hold'em.

At the time, I didn't realize the significance of the gift I was given. Getting taught by a world-champion Poker player.

I asked Daniel to distill it down for me like i'm 5 and he said...

  1. Fold more hands than you play.
  2. Be aggressive from the button.

I played for a few months and then left poker behind for years. Life gets busy for all of us.

That was until I was invited to my neighbours 40th Birthday party. Where I wiped out all of his friends - and the bug bit me again.

  1. I needed a way to turn my brain off. A new hobby to decompress and get my mind off work.

  2. Young men in particular are gravitating towards hobbies of high agency.
Aka. In a world that sometimes feels out of your control, what you can control is your skill at a thing... and that's intoxicating.

I still love magic - but magic needs to be shared with people to get the value from it.

So a solitary hobby. One I could enjoy, by myself, on the couch every Sunday afternoon, spoke to me... Just pure me time.

I thought I was a hot-shot after that home game win.

So I put $100 into Pokerstars > got wiped out.

"Maybe it's all bots."

So I put $100 into GG Poker > got wiped out.

Confirmed. It wasn't bots. It was me.

What was I doing wrong?

The answer was ego. Playing too many trash hands. Hoping to hit what I needed.

Poker pros estimate that 70-80% of winning is done pre-flop, with hand & table position selection.

Aka - which hands should you play from which position on the table.

To beginners this is gobbledygook.

So I coded myself a webapp to help me make better pre-flop decisions in low-stakes cash games online.

You can use it for free here > https://prefloppro.com

Oh and to give this story a happy ending, I did win my money back.. and then some

But i'm not treating this as a new career - it won't replace my current income. It's just for fun and being up overall feels good.

I withdrew £222 in winnings (on $1c/$2c low stakes tables) last month and that paid for a few date nights with the wife.

I could go harder if I wanted to - but I'm also not dumb to the fact that pros play online - pros that have years more experience than me, and I wouldn't beat them on big tables, even with this app.

It's designed for beginners — more of a trainer/companion to use alongside play.

Either on your phone or desktop.

You enter what cards you have and Pre-Flop Pro will tell you whether you should raise or fold, in a 6-person game of No-limit hold'em.

I designed this for low-stakes cash games, because that's where people want to have fun and experience the thrill of winning - without losing their house to a 'bad-beat'.

A bad-beat is a poker term for when the river card gives your opponent, who was losing, the exact card they need to beat you.

If you do end up using it, I'd welcome any feedback in the comments below. You can always start playing poker on a free app store game to get used to using this on the side - probably recommended.

Don't take life so seriously and make sure you're playing for fun - and within your financial means.
