Back in 2019, I had one goal: perform magic full-time.
No backup plan. No “safety net.” Just a deck of cards and a head full of delusion that passion alone could pay the bills.
Then the world shut down. Venues closed. Gigs vanished. And suddenly, “being a performer” felt more like a dream than a job description.
Five years later, I prefer the stability of a paycheck. The structure. The security. The comfort of knowing rent will get paid, even if I don’t pick up a deck for a month.
But I started wondering… am I alone in that?
Did the pandemic change how you see magic too?Did it make the dream smaller - or sharper?Did it turn your passion into a hobby again?
I want to know where the community stands now.Not just the pros, but everyone - from bedroom cardists to working mentalists.
So tell me:
1. What were you doing for work back in 2019?2. What was your big goal with magic at that time?3. What do you do for work now?4. What’s your goal with magic these days?5. What’s standing in your way right now?6. How could Ellusionist help you get there?

Hi Ellusionists,
Thank you for the opportunity to win a $100 gift card to your store. Here are my answers:
1. What were you doing for work back in 2019? I was working as a freelance Event Production technician for Event and Media Technologies and PSAV.
2. What was your big goal with magic at that time? My biggest goal for magic at the time might have been to master escapism. I really liked the movie Now You See Me and at the time, if I got into any trouble I wanted to easily escape. I did get into some unwanted trouble and I escaped only to get caught and returned until I was properly released. What an adventure.
3. What do you do for work now? I still work in Event Production.
4. What’s your goal with magic these days? My goal with magic these days has progressed from escapism to learning and mastering three tricks and finally to obtaining and mastering Crazy Sam’s mind. I really want to perform telekinesis, especially the exploding chip trick.
5. What’s standing in your way right now? Nothing is standing in my way, per se. I would love to get the kit with the $100 gift card, if you know what I mean. But when I make up my mind to get the kit myself, I will (if I don’t win the $100 gift card… which is what I want).
6. How could Ellusionist help you get there? Ellusionist could reward me with the $100 gift card so that I can start learning Crazy Sam’s Mind. Or Ellusionist could give me a discount on the kit. I am excited to learn and master these tricks.
Thanks again for the opportunity to share my adventure in magic. All the best.

Good afternoon.
1. Well I was declared permanently disabled due to an accident at work. Magic is what kept me going.
2. My only goal was just to show improvement in the effects and moves I was practicing.
3. I am permanently disabled, so I don’t work. I just practice magic and maintain the house.
4. My goal now is to perform for people. Not necessarily a show or something, but walk around.
5. Crippling anxiety and depression. I have managed to perform for wait staff on a cruise ship. It went amazing!! I just need to keep building my confidence.
6. Ellusionist has already helped me so much. Making me an Ambassador, earning money to buy more effects and books. The YouTube videos showing Yannick messing up, gave me so much more confidence. It showed me even the Best mess up! (Winning that gift card would help lol 😉)
Thank you for this!

1. What were you doing for work back in 2019?
In 2019, I was working in e-commerce. A few years earlier, around 2017, I had tried to start performing magic professionally, but my anxiety and stage fright held me back.
2. What was your big goal with magic at that time?
My goal was to perform close-up magic in hotels and weddings in the Algarve — a beautiful region in the south of Portugal, very popular with tourists and couples from the UK.
3. What do you do for work now?
Right now, I work as a barber. It’s creative in a different way, but my passion for magic never disappeared.
4. What’s your goal with magic these days?
I’m building new strolling and table-hopping sets to give magic another serious shot — this time with a calmer mindset and more self-awareness. My goal is to finally share my magic with real audiences again.
5. What’s standing in your way right now?
Mainly performance anxiety — the fear of failing during a performance. It’s something I’m working on daily, both mentally and emotionally.
6. How could Ellusionist help you get there?
Ellusionist could help by creating resources or guidance on managing performance anxiety — practical ways for magicians to overcome fear, build confidence, and feel ready to perform under real pressure.
