The Magic Industry Changed. Did You?

The Magic Industry Changed. Did You?

Back in 2019, I had one goal: perform magic full-time.

No backup plan. No “safety net.” Just a deck of cards and a head full of delusion that passion alone could pay the bills.

Then the world shut down. Venues closed. Gigs vanished. And suddenly, “being a performer” felt more like a dream than a job description.

Five years later, I prefer the stability of a paycheck. The structure. The security. The comfort of knowing rent will get paid, even if I don’t pick up a deck for a month.

But I started wondering… am I alone in that?

Did the pandemic change how you see magic too?Did it make the dream smaller - or sharper?Did it turn your passion into a hobby again?

I want to know where the community stands now.Not just the pros, but everyone - from bedroom cardists to working mentalists.

So tell me:
1. What were you doing for work back in 2019?2. What was your big goal with magic at that time?3. What do you do for work now?4. What’s your goal with magic these days?5. What’s standing in your way right now?6. How could Ellusionist help you get there?

Respond below with your answers and we'll pick one comment at random to win a $100 Ellusionist Gift Card.
(Yes, really. No catch. We just want to hear from you.)

1. What were you doing for work back in 2019?
- I was here in WA State working as a Sr. Software Engineer, struggling with bills, continuing my DJ business, suffering with back pain from a Navy injury back in 1985 until my spinal fusion in March 2021 to correct it.
2. What was your big goal with magic at that time?
- I have done magic since I was 14. I do magic with my DJ business, Magically Yours DJs – 37 years now, www.magicdjs.com. My goal was to get better, perform and make a difference in people’s lives.
3. What do you do for work now?
- After 30 years in Software Engineering, I’ve finally found a career in Architectural Drafting, my first love since I was 16. I’m going for my Architects license at 65 (14 OCT was my birthday) and still performing Magic with my DJ business.
4. What’s your goal with magic these days?
- To continue to change lives with magic. Give them something to remember and see the smiles on peoples faces because of my “Magic!”
5. What’s standing in your way right now?
- Nothing except the amount of Magic I have, I need to now organize, learn, and put into scenes, sets, and shows.
6. How could Ellusionist help you get there?
- Help this retiree figure out and navigate the AMOUNT of Magic I’ve accumulated, help me to rise and create the magic so I can handle the overwhelming amount I have, learn what I can and become proficient. What find in some magic is moves that are confusing, magic that breaks and does not live up to it’s ability to last (where I need to repair) which better QA would’ve resulted in a better product. Magic that is disappointing, Magic that doesn’t fit where you buy something like the Cats Paw and it doesn’t fit my finger because it’s NOT made for someone with large hands or Missing Finger by Mario Lopez where the gimmick looks SO FAKE that a person will see it doesn’t match a REAL hand. I see thumb tips coming out with the “Quick” on the nail now. That’s great but the white part at the base of the thumb nail is WAY TOO BRIGHT! It stands out. Pick my nails and my nail quicks are a dull white. Magicians who create magic need to “THINK” like a user and not make something that doesn’t fit or won’t set well. Thumb tips that are “HARD SHELL” don’t work for me. Things like that.

I’m trying to sell a magic affect but so far no one cares to listen and I’ve presented to many dealers like Murphy’s, Penguin, TCC, etc…

The saying on my website is: “Let Us Show You Our Magic!” THAT is what I want to do.

1. What were you doing for work back in 2019? At the time I was working in Corrections at a prison and Magic was just a hobby.

2. What was your big goal with magic at that time? Continuing to get better and hopefully start doing shows eventually.

3. What do you do for work now? I work in retail now. Corrections = no life work balance but I perform magic regularly as a side hustle.

4. What’s your goal with magic these days? Growing my business and hopefully do magic full time soon.

5. What’s standing in your way right now? MONEY! Which is the root of all evil. It’s always money money money. Im sick of it but you can’t do anything hardly without it. I can not afford to quit my day job or go part time until my business alone replaces that income and it has not done that yet. But it’s slowly getting there to the part time income. Key word SLOWLY! Anyways, I love magic and I’d do it free if I was rich but I’m poor lol so I have to make money some how.

6. How could Ellusionist help you get there? To be honest probably nothing unless you wanna give me a lot of money lol and I doubt that. I don’t need more tricks I have plenty of them. Nowadays I’m working on my show mostly but I occasionally buy a trick or two if it’s good. I’m just free at the moment and figured I’d respond to this email. But in all seriousness if you have a goal you have to pretty much achieve it yourself! Especially if it’s a personal goal being a full time performer. One can’t hold their hand out and expect magic to happen. Instead you have to go out there and work for it.
Peace,
Dillon

I was a chauffer back in 2019. My big goal in magic at that time was to stay sharp and rehearse the close-up routines I used to perform in the 80’s when I used to make a living doing magic in restaurants and lounges and at private parties and functions. Now I am retired and I am rehearsing even more in order to try to perform like I used to. The only thing standing in my way is to be fully recovered from a stroke I had back in June of this year (2025). How can Ellusionist help me? Well, the $100 gift card would be helpful. I could use the coupon to update some of my props etc. You folks have an awesome website and I will be ordering some things in the near future. Thank you for the good work, Anthony Hanson.
