The Magic Industry Changed. Did You?

The Magic Industry Changed. Did You?

Back in 2019, I had one goal: perform magic full-time.

No backup plan. No “safety net.” Just a deck of cards and a head full of delusion that passion alone could pay the bills.

Then the world shut down. Venues closed. Gigs vanished. And suddenly, “being a performer” felt more like a dream than a job description.

Five years later, I prefer the stability of a paycheck. The structure. The security. The comfort of knowing rent will get paid, even if I don’t pick up a deck for a month.

But I started wondering… am I alone in that?

Did the pandemic change how you see magic too?Did it make the dream smaller - or sharper?Did it turn your passion into a hobby again?

I want to know where the community stands now.Not just the pros, but everyone - from bedroom cardists to working mentalists.

So tell me:
1. What were you doing for work back in 2019?2. What was your big goal with magic at that time?3. What do you do for work now?4. What’s your goal with magic these days?5. What’s standing in your way right now?6. How could Ellusionist help you get there?

Respond below with your answers and we'll pick one comment at random to win a $100 Ellusionist Gift Card.
(Yes, really. No catch. We just want to hear from you.)

1. Professional musician. Magic performances were largely limited to performing at the merch booth for fans of the band.
2. My goal was to perform magic separate from my work as a musician.
3. Public educator, but I still tour regularly with my band and perform close-up magic.
4. To develop a parlor show.
5. I wouldn’t say anything is “standing in my way” other than the usual: time.
6. I would say that Elusionist has already been helping me get there. Just as I might return to a favorite book like Giobbi’s CARD COLLEGE series, the resources I’ve gathered from Elusionist put me in a playful, experimental mindset. The video tutuorials for products like SEER are a stepping off place for creating ideas.

I have always done magic since I was 15 years old now I am 40 I have kids and married and sometimes I’ve gotten too busy for magic I still love him I still have a passion for it and I want to continue I am a warehouse worker from 9:00 to 5:00 but I’m still trying to find time to perform magic cuz when I perform people love it and their reactions I get makes me want to continue but it’s just hard because life is so busy but I don’t think I’ll ever stop thank you for letting me comment on this.

First off: Great initiative – thank you for this!

1. What were you doing for work back in 2019?
I just left my high paying job in Shanghai to go to Cusco/Perú to help in volunteering projects for kids.

2. What was your big goal with magic at that time?
My Spanish was (still is) pretty much not existing. Three months before, Healed & Sealed performed by Justin Willman just popped up in my YouTube feed and it got me hooked. I was able to show a very easy cups & balls routine to the kids I was working with and it broke all language barriers. After work, I knew those kids experienced something that will stay with them for a while and they talk about with their friends and families. Those kids, I have to mention, all were mentally and physically handicapped.

3. What do you do for work now?
I just got fired from another high-paying consultancy job and starting today I will start being actively involved with a magic agency as a Strategic Partner (way to go to actually perform for money).

4. What’s your goal with magic these days?
I am aiming at performing in a kids hospital around Christmas time and am putting together a routine. That’s actually very hard and I need to diversify away from “just cards”

5. What’s standing in your way right now?
Nothing! :)

6. How could Ellusionist help you get there?
There’s great gimmicks that can enhance magic. I would love to look into Level One by Christian Grace (love his Enigma app). Obviously there’s more to discover!

Great questions -

Back in 2019 I was primarily doing work as a speaker and consultant but put it temporarily on hold because of a cancer journey. All good now and back at it with a USA Best seller now.

Back then I really was more of a hobbiest with my magic and not doing much of it publicly

Today I am speaking around the country around my new book and doing the work to bring light and hope to people’s financial journey.

I am looking to more actively integrate magic and effects in my speaking to make the lesson more visually distinct and memorable.

For me it is about finding the right effects that fit the message and work that I do without taking away from the key note itself.

You guys are really great. For me help with some grounded effects in allowing them to be used to teach a lesson versus simply entertaining. Also, the best ways to create the narrative/scripts to bring them to life.

Thanks again!
