The Magic Industry Changed. Did You?

The Magic Industry Changed. Did You?

Back in 2019, I had one goal: perform magic full-time.

No backup plan. No “safety net.” Just a deck of cards and a head full of delusion that passion alone could pay the bills.

Then the world shut down. Venues closed. Gigs vanished. And suddenly, “being a performer” felt more like a dream than a job description.

Five years later, I prefer the stability of a paycheck. The structure. The security. The comfort of knowing rent will get paid, even if I don’t pick up a deck for a month.

But I started wondering… am I alone in that?

Did the pandemic change how you see magic too?Did it make the dream smaller - or sharper?Did it turn your passion into a hobby again?

I want to know where the community stands now.Not just the pros, but everyone - from bedroom cardists to working mentalists.

So tell me:
1. What were you doing for work back in 2019?2. What was your big goal with magic at that time?3. What do you do for work now?4. What’s your goal with magic these days?5. What’s standing in your way right now?6. How could Ellusionist help you get there?

Respond below with your answers and we'll pick one comment at random to win a $100 Ellusionist Gift Card.
(Yes, really. No catch. We just want to hear from you.)

1. What were you doing for work back in 2019?
I was working as a professional magician. My long-held goal—to return to California and become a member of the Academy of Magical Arts, performing regularly at the Magic Castle in Hollywood—had already been fulfilled back in 2007.
2. What was your big goal with magic at that time?
In 2019, my focus was on booking more shows and refining my routines. I wanted to elevate the quality of my act and expand my reach as a performer.
3. What do you do for work now?
Today, I’m a part-time magician and full-time father. It’s a balance that works beautifully for our family, allowing me to stay creatively engaged while being present at home.
4. What’s your goal with magic these days?
My current goal is to continue booking more shows and ideally establish a residency or regular performance venue near where I live. I also remain committed to performing at the Magic Castle and keeping my act fresh and engaging.
5. What’s standing in your way right now?
Time and motivation. Between family responsibilities and the demands of daily life, it’s a challenge to consistently carve out space for creative development and outreach.
6. How could Ellusionist help you get there?
When I lived in Germany, Ellusionist was a lifeline—providing access to new magic through DVDs and props, including their beautifully designed vintage Bicycle decks. Their resources helped me stay inspired and connected to the craft. My signature fork/spoon bending routine, which earned praise from the Amazing Randi as “the greatest metal bending routine he’s seen in his lifetime,” was shaped in part by tools I discovered through Ellusionist. Continued access to innovative material and community support could reignite that spark and help me push my act to the next level.

Magically,

1. In 2019 I was working an apprenticeship and I’d been doing magic for about 15 months at that point at I was utterly obsessed.
2. My big goal in magic was to do magic as my sole full time career and make enough to live comfortably off of that, I also wanted to create magic.
3. I’m still doing magic and my love is still there just I do it part time currently and I work in a factory, I’m working to create more magic too, but financially difficulties set me back a few years.
4. My goal is unchanged, to be a professional full time magician and earning well off it, I’d definitely like to create more products to sell to help this, and I’d love to teach magic too. The ultimate dream would be my own internet or TV show. I also did dream of working with Ellusionist as I’m good friends with Peter Turner and he spoke highly of his time with you all.
5. What’s standing in my way currently is money, I need to have more finances put aside to help this, I want more exposure and ultimately more time to work on my ideas.
6. Id love to trial new tricks or if I got the opportunity to work with you that would be incredible, I’d love to travel the world doing magic, I’d also like a chance to pitch some ideas too where I believe the effect would be incredible but I need help tying a few loose ends!

Thank you very much!

Oh man magic has always been a side gig for me as I grew up in a small tourist town (Alexandria Bay, 1000 Islands NY!) and finding gigs was tough. I sure did get a lot of free drinks at the bar a few free dinners. Now I live in Syracuse and work fulltime since 2019 for a local credit union. I love my job but always dreamed of building my magic business up more. Currently I use gigsalad to find leads and get calls from past customers. The stability and passion I have for both my leadership career and magic are equal and so I’m always torn. Lately I’ve coasted with the magic I have and haven’t really added to my magic trunk in quite awhile. I need to fine tune what kind of magic and gigs I want to do. Currently it’s either birthday parties or adult parties where I get to do the magic I really love. Ellusionist has always been there when I wanted new magic or new skills. Now I wish you guys had a mentoring program to help me with building my business and my skills. Be pretty epic to get synced up with another magician who’s rocking it and can give me some insight and guidance. Life keeps getting iny way between my wife losing her job or getting hurt something comes up that holds me back. Thankfully magic is still there and shows come up and it helps pay the bills.

I have been a middle school teacher for 21 yrs. When the world shut down I would study magic sparingly. I had no real plans for magic. I would buy playing cards and practice tricks at home. I never performed for anyone. I had anxiety about performing. I used the shut down to read, study and practice. Scripting magic and Richard osterlind prepared me for planning and writing my own magic and magic show. I’ve learned alot in these 5 years. I’ve since performed 3 times in public. One to a carnival your crowd with probably 200-300 people watching. I have gigs lined up, a form to reserve an Event and a digital business card ready to go. I plan to retire from teaching in 9 years and hope to perform steadily by they to compliment my retirement pay. Most teacher return to substitute to supplement $1,000 but I am never stepping foot in this place again. Lol. I also hope to travel and perform, I’m off with pay all summer. I’m going to using l travel anyway, I might as well have a gig lined up. There is a talent agency that hires speakers, I would like to sign with them to get higher paying events. But I don’t mind doing that on my own like Kevin Hart. I’ll get the venue, I’ll promote it, and I’ll fulfill it.
